2009 Fall Church History Tour
Sunday, September 20 – Tuesday, September 29, 2009
Sites to see include: Palmyra, Kirtland, Niagara Falls, Nauvoo, Carthage, Jamesport (Amish area), Adam-ondi-Ahman, Richmond, Liberty, Far West & Independence.
Sept. 20, Sunday – Our group air departs early morning from Salt Lake City, Utah. After our late afternoon arrival in Palmyra, we start our tour as we stand atop Hill Cumorah. Lodging – Palmyra Inn.
Sept. 21, Monday – Our day begins at the Smith farm (log home, frame home, sacred grove). Today we also visit the Martin Harris farm, Alvin Smith’s grave, and E. B. Grandin Bldg. (Book of Mormon publishing site). Later this afternoon, we travel to Fayette for a tour of the Peter Whitmer Sr. Log Home and Visitors’ Center. Lodging – Palmyra Inn.
Sept. 22, Tuesday – Our day begins with a 9 a.m. session in the Palmyra Temple (optional). After a final drive through Palmyra, we continue on to Mendon with sites connected to Brigham Young & Heber C. Kimball. We will also visit Niagara Falls (Canadian side) before continuing on to Kirtland, Ohio. You must have a current passport to cross into Canada. Lodging – Lawnfield Inn.
Sept. 23, Wednesday – We begin our day @ 8 a.m. with a special morningside and tour of the Morley farm with Karl Ricks Anderson, LDS author and authority on Kirtland. Afterwards, we will tour the Kirtland Temple. We’ll also visit the North Kirtland Cemetery, quarry, and drive by homes once owned by early LDS Saints. This afternoon, we drive to the neighboring town of Hiram to see the John Johnson farm. Lodging – Lawnfield Inn & Suites.
Sept. 24, Thursday – We finish our stay in Kirtland with a morning tour of the Kirtland Flats (LDS visitors’ center, Newel K. Whitney store, home, sawmill, and ashery). This afternoon we take our mid-tour flight from Cleveland to St. Louis. We then travel by bus to Nauvoo where we will catch our first glimpse of the rebuilt Nauvoo Temple. Lodging – Nauvoo Condos.
Sept. 25, Friday – Our day begins at the LDS visitors’ center. Today, you will have free time to tour the restored homes and shops. In addition, we have scheduled tours of the Joseph Smith Homestead and Mansion House. Tonight we enjoy a 7 p.m. performance, “Rendezvous in Old Nauvoo.” Lodging – Nauvoo Condos.
Sept. 26, Saturday – We begin our day with an 8 a.m. session at the Nauvoo Temple (optional). Afterwards, you can enjoy free time for shopping and tours of the restored homes. Later this afternoon, we drive to Carthage for a memorable tour at the Carthage Jail visitors’ center. Lodging – Nauvoo Condos.
Sept. 27, Sunday – After attending an 8 a.m. Sacrament Meeting, we bid farewell to Nauvoo and travel to western Missouri. Sites to see include Haun’s Mill (weather permitting) and Far West. Lodging – Best Western Acorn Inn in Cameron.
Sept. 28, Monday – We start the day with a visit to Adam-ondi-Ahman. After visiting and discussing the importance of this sacred site, we drive to Jamesport, a small country town with a large Amish population. After lunch, we continue on to Richmond to see the Monument to The Three Witnesses. Tonight we lodge in Independence where our first stop will be the recently remodeled Independence visitors’ center. Lodging – Independence/Kansas City area.
Sept. 29, Tuesday – Today we visit the Community of Christ Temple, and the Temple Lot. We’ll enjoy other sites in the area associated with President Harry S Truman, before going to Liberty where we tour Historic Liberty Jail. This evening, we travel to the Kansas City Airport for our flight home.
This schedule is subject to change. A deposit of $200 per person is required to hold your space. The final payment is due by August 10, 2009. Tour price of $1,350/person (double occupancy) includes: mid-tour flight from Cleveland to St. Louis, deluxe motor coach, all hotels, daily breakfast, some lunches, during travel insurance, taxes, tips, and all entrance fees.
