News and Updates
The LDS Family Travel Guide for Independence, Nauvoo and Winter Quarters has been revised and reprinted as of March 2010. Included in this updated version is the latest news on the recently discovered Michael Arthur Farm and Burial Ground in Liberty, Missouri.
Michael Arthur showed great compassion to the Saints following their expulsion from Jackson County. His befriending of the Saints came at both personal cost and loss of political standing. Michael Arthur employed a number of Saints, including Lyman Wight, Wilford Woodruff and John Whitmer.
Church meetings were held on the farm and Zion’s Camp was officially discharged here on July 3, 1834. Both Peter and his brother Christian Whitmer, two of the Eight Witnesses, are buried on the Arthur farm. Current plans are to erect a monument on this farm, similar to the Monument to the Three Witnesses which is located in nearby Richmond.
